Platon Karataev, named after a Leo Tolstoy character, was formed in 2016. With their music, the Hungarian indie quartet wanders around the core of existence, seeking answers through paradoxes, contemplating on questions by observing elements on an atomic level or viewing them from an astronomical perspective. After For Her’s (2017) instant success the band gradually moved away from their acoustic sound to a more broader one. Atoms (2020), with a heavier instrumentation, focuses on speaking about the most universal but on the most personal level with catharsis being a key element of the album. The upcoming new record (Nov 2021) will continue diving into the collective subconscious and will be followed by the band’s first Europe tour. In the past four years Platon Karataev not only gained attention on a local level but was recognized internationally, too with more than 5 million streams on Spotify mostly from the USA, the UK, and Germany. Besides three different German tours the band already performed at major festivals like Sziget, Reeperbahn, Zandari Festa Seoul, Moscow Music Week, and Liverpool Sound City.
During the lockdown we wrote our third LP. We are now working on this new material but we wanted to say goodbye to our previous LP, Atoms with some sort of visual recording. In many ways these three songs are the songs that summarize our second LP’s overall sound and mood. We had the chance to shoot in one of Budapest’s largest venues, Akvárium, a place that is close to our hearts as we had several sold out gigs here in the past. Reflecting on the current pandemic and in the absence of our audience we shot this session facing towards each other and performing on our audience’s place instead of playing on the stage
These songs – focusing on ideas such as floating/falling in nothingness; entering a realm where meaning ceases to exist and one finds oneself in a place with nothing to hold onto – really came to life when performed in this large, dark, empty space. Cool shades of light emphasize a sense of distance and shivering (Ocean), other times (Aphelion) warm shades symbolize the Sun to which the band is sometimes closer sometimes farther away.
While watching the video one finds oneself in a constant circulation around the band and thus enters a sort of never ending spiral both triggered by the audio and the visuals.
See you on the shows!
